How to fight depression and anxiety?

According to a recent study published in Lancet Psychiatry, around 197 million people were victims of depression in the year 2017. This means that 1 in every 7 Indian is a victim of depression or anxiety. This statistics is eye-opening for us as when our kids grow up, they will have to face bosses, spouses, friends, colleagues, family members who are either under anxiety or depression. Or, they could themselves be a victim of depression.

And, it also goes on to show that one member in every family is either undergoing anxiety or depression, knowingly or unknowingly. If we ponder upon this deeply, we will understand that this is really dangerous for our society.

With increasing complexities of life, life is only becoming tougher and tougher for most people. But, there are still fewer chunk of people who love every bit of life. Right from morning till they hit the bed in the night, they are enjoying life to the fullest.

Yes, try to look around your circle; you might remember one such person who is always happy and contented. He or she may be distantly known to you, but you might have observed or felt strong positive energy in them. So, if life is that complicated, then it must be for one and all. How come few people are still resonating in happiness, joy and peace?

Well, the answer lies in having the right perspective toward life. But, you need to work towards developing this attitude; here is how you do it:

Maintain a notebook to write 5 thank you notes each day: Gratitude rewires your brain to feel happy and contented. This is a scientifically proven fact. Remember, in earlier days, our grandparents would make us say thank you prayers every night so that we can count our blessings and feel happy about them.

If you are just thankful for things around you will see that your brain starts responding to problems positively. Positivity is already ingrained in our DNA. It is just that we have let negativity overshadow our positive instincts.

No matter how depressed you are currently in life, there must be a few things that you surely loved in your life. It could be your career, your mother, your family, your financial worth, your appearance, your friends, etc. Now, it’s time to write thank-you notes for each of these things you are grateful for in life in a notebook. There is something very powerful about writing something on paper. When you write something, it gets registered in your subconscious mind. The more you write the same thing over and over, the stronger its hold gets in your mind.

The benefit of doing this is that your sub-consious mind is still radiating the vibration of being thankful even when your consious mind is engaged in somthing else. This powerful vibration will act as magnet in your life. It will attract so much good in your life that is beyond your imagination. But, you need to write consistently thank you notes for it to start acting in your favor.

Every single time you say ‘thank you’ from your heart, the universe loves it, but if you are not consistent in being thankful, you will see the results much later in life.

Thank mother-nature: Our bodies are made of sky, earth, water, air, and fire. These five elements together form Mother Nature. If you thank each of these elements, automatically you see a tremendous change in your physical and mental health.

Anxiety and depression will not even touch you when you are thankful to Mother Nature. Here, are a few rituals to follow to see immense changes in your mental health:

  • When you wake-up in the morning, you must touch the ground as the first thing and thank it for letting us walk over it.
  • When you step out the first time in the morning, thank the Sun and the Sky for providing us with warmth and heat. The sunlight has the power to repair our bodies, which is why people take sunbath on weekends or holidays.
  • Whenever you take a bath or drink water, thank Mother Nature for providing you with an ample amount of pure water to address all your needs. When you bless the water before drinking, it creates magic in your body. It increases love, happiness in your body.
  • When the cool breeze touches you, it is time to thank the air for being present in an ample amount to provide you with life.

Though this may sound silly to you, speically if you are hearing this for the first time, but the impact of these small rituals is profound on your negative thoughts and emotions. Mother Nature is a giver. She will fill you will immense happiness, peace and contentment the moment you thank her for all that she has been giving unconditionally.

Moreover, your mental health is in your hands. Thinking positive or negative thoughts is purely in your hands. As humans, we have the incredible power to create our lives with our positive or negative thoughts. Every time a negative thought enters your mind, immediately replace it with a positive thought. You need to do this for a few days, and it will automatically become a habit that will transform you completely.
